Buy Nothing Day - where did the bendy cucumber go?

The global Buy Nothing Day happened on Saturday 26 November 2011. In Berlin the volunteer organizers of the event decided the theme to be food waste. Posters promoting the event asked “What happens to the bendy cucumber?”. And that, coupled with word-of-mouth marketing, was enough to lure in ca. 70 people in Neukölln to eat 100% dumpster-dived food, to watch a movie called Taste the Waste, to have a questions and answers session with the director, to hear how Community Supported Agriculture works and to discuss life without money.

The atmosphere was warm and friendly. For one evening these people formed an ad-hoc family that helped each other in cooking, washing dishes, serving food and of course socializing with each other. And the best part: it was all free! These kind of events might look like small beacons of light amidst the overwhelming global issues that we face today, but after all, they are part of a larger process of change towards a more sensible and sustainable society.
