A visit to the Swap Shop!

Here comes a small sneak peak into the Swap Shop! The last days there was more than a 100 items swapped in the shop! Visitors exchanged their time and knowledge for items and the other way around, cooked a tasty dinner in the food swap, exchanged plants on the green Monday and brainstormed about alternative economies. The swap shop is open until Sunday, you find us in the contemporary art festival Survival Kit in Riga, Latvia.

Some examples of swaps:

  • a performance of the oasis song wonder wall in exchange for a metal tie
  • a spanish lesson in exchange for a gas mask
  • a spaceship (built in the workshop of the swap shop) in exchange for a  jackie chan movie
  • a keyboard in exchange for a washing board
  • an eraser for a cactus
  • the advice “how to end a relationship without drama” in exchange for a Hawaii shirt

Some good advices from our visitors!

Soon more advices will follow in vimeo… keep your eyes open and get ready to swap!

The KIEZMOBIL first ACTION

During the Ramadan Fest -on the corner with the Ganghoferstraße and the Karl-Marx-straße in wonderfull NEUKÖLLN- the Trial&Error Kiezmobil made it’s first appearance! The last few months we have put together this bike trailer, with the Kiez (German for neighbourhood) for the Kiez.

From mostly trash and with a lot of love this amazing multi purpose mobile workshop with movable boxes got created. We are very proud to share it with you!

During the wonderful sunny Ramadan Fest the Kiezmobil transformed into a screen-printing workshop where lots of people  printed Kiezmobil and Trial&Error produced images on pieces of clothing from our free-shop as well as on their self brought garments.

Now this great mobile bike trailer is there to be used in and around the Ganghofer aria. It’s usable for many different actions, anything that needs a little transport and a working surface is suitable; from community gardening till street art actions or for a lovely picknick :)

Introduction to Processing Workshop(s)

Processing

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to create images, animations, and interactions.

Initially developed to serve as a software sketchbook and to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context, Processing also has evolved into a tool for generating finished professional work. Today, there are tens of thousands of students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists who use Processing for learning, prototyping, and production. In the recent words of Ben Fry, one of the co-creators of the project:

"Processing seeks to ruin the careers of talented designers by tempting them away from their usual tools and into the world of programming and computation. Similarly, the project is designed to turn engineers and computer scientists to less gainful employment as artists and designers."

Part 1 : Everything you always wanted to know about Processing but were afraid to ask | Tue Sep 13th

Prerequisite: No previous programming experience required, just an open mind and an idea of how you would like to use Processing in your work.

The beginning half of this workshop will start in a traditional talk format, and explain the basics of type-based programming, and things like variables, datatypes, methods, and functions.

The remaining half will be conducted in a open format, with questions, discussion, and hands-on coding in discovering methods and techniques.

Part 2 : Applied Learning and Problem Solving with Processing | Wed Sep 14th

Prerequisite: Part 1 of this workshop, a previous workshop from me, or previous experience with Processing

During the first half of this workshop, participants will use hands-on techniques in order to complete exercises designed to give them experience in problem solving using Processing.

For the second half of the workshop, Jesse will help participants design a custom program featuring one or more modes of interaction.

SWAP SHOP at Survival Kit

The 8-18th of September Kulturlabor Trial&Error will set up a Swap shop in the contemporary art festival Survival Kit in Riga, Latvia.

The Swap shop is a marketplace, where no money is used. The visitors of the installation can exchange their own items, time or knowledge in order to get other visitors items, time or knowledge. There are no prices, customers estimate the value of their desired goods themselves.

The visitors are invited to shop by exchanging the following:

ITEMS – visitors are invited to bring objects they do not need anymore. It can be for example books, shoes or clothes. In the shop they are placed in shelves,
boxes and cloth hangers - ready to be exchanged.

TIME – the swap shop has a workshop zone where visitors can pay with their time. Labor can consist of for example: producing items for the shop, cleaning or managing the shop, brainstorming on certain topics, or other tasks which emerge in the process.

KNOWLEDGE – there is access to a video booth with camera and opportunity to record video messages. Visitors can pay with knowledge – such as useful tips and academical theories, jokes, shocking facts, a practical demonstration of the coolest dance steps or how to tie a tie. Paying with knowledge means recording a message. If the visitor has bought knowledge, he/she can choose, how many videos he/she has paid for and watch the videos in exchange for items or time.

The concept of the Swap shop is built on the idea that everything we need is produced - but that these resources not always are available for those who actually need it. There is enough food, enough houses, enough clothes for everyone. By using time and knowledge as alternative currencies, we invite the visitors of the shop to estimate value, and experience trade in another setting than everyday life.

The Swap shop will be set up in cooperation with our Latvian partners TAKA. The swap shop was originally developed in the Open Zone of the festival Transmediale.

blitzTag in Marzahn

Invited by Sumone Productions for the opening of their Quergange Marzahn show at Galerie M, GRLG headed on a long-ass S-Bahn trip out to the desolate landscape of Marzahn with a 6.5K beamer, a few extension cords, a 25mw laser, and put on a light show for the *ahem* masses ;-)

Last Saturday we unexpectedly found ourselves cooking a cold soup at the Open Design City while preparing for a great evening of live music with the band Tralalka! Candle lights, dramatic music, shortly said - a small evening of magic! Big love and thanks to Tralalka for the performance, and Open Design City for providing the space!
